Simon Attias Synagogue
Simon Attias Synagogue is one of several historic synagogues within Essaouira's former Jewish quarter (Mellah), reflecting the community that once made up nearly half the town's population and drove much of its maritime trade with Europe. Many of the port's leading merchant families were Jewish, appointed by the Sultan as official trade representatives with European powers, and their synagogues remain scattered throughout the old Mellah district.
