Sijilmasa
Sijilmasa was once one of the greatest trading cities of the medieval Sahara, a gateway for gold, salt, and slave caravans moving between West Africa and the Mediterranean world from the 8th century onward. Little remains above ground today beyond scattered ruins near Rissani, but the site marks the origin point of the dynasty that still rules Morocco, close to Merzouga.
