Salé

Salé — Rabat's Historic Twin on the Bou Regreg

Just across the Bou Regreg estuary from the capital, Salé is one of Morocco's oldest port cities — a working medina that feels quieter and more lived-in than its glamorous neighbor across the water. For centuries it had a fierce independent identity, home to the "Salé Rovers," corsairs who controlled Atlantic trade routes in the 17th century republic of Bou Regreg. Today it's a short tram ride from Rabat, but its atmosphere — unhurried, unpolished, deeply local — is entirely its own.

Why Salé?

The monumental Bab Mrisa ("Gate of the Little Port"), a 13th-century Marinid water gate that once let boats sail directly into the city walls
The Great Mosque and the Medersa of Abu al-Hasan, considered among the finest surviving examples of Marinid religious architecture in Morocco
A working artisan quarter of woodworkers, weavers, and leatherworkers largely untouched by souvenir-shop tourism
Easy river-crossing access to Rabat's Kasbah des Oudaias, Hassan Tower, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V
Genuine, walkable medina streets at a fraction of Marrakech's crowds and prices
