Place el-Hedim is Meknes's grand main square, built by Moulay Ismail as an open plaza in front of the monumental Bab Mansour gate, historically used for public gatherings and ceremonies and today lined with cafes overlooking the medina's entrance. In the evening it fills with food stalls and street performers, echoing the atmosphere of Marrakech's more famous Jemaa el-Fna on a smaller scale.
