Merzouga — Into the Sahara
Merzouga sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, Morocco’s most famous stretch of Saharan desert, where sand rises in waves up to 150 metres against the horizon. Most visitors come for a camel trek and a night in a desert camp under an exceptionally clear, light-pollution-free sky, but the area around Merzouga also holds real desert history — the ruins of Sijilmasa, a once-great caravan trading city, and Khamlia, a village famous for Gnawa music descended from trans-Saharan trade routes.
